This medication is for the symptomatic treatment of constipation. It can also be prescribed for hepatic encephalopathy (cerebral infection linked to liver failure).


You must never take Duphalac in the following cases:

- allergy to one of its components or lactulose,

- Crohn’s disease, intestinal occlusion,

- abdominal pain (stomach pain),

- digestive perforation or possible perforation,

- galactose intolerance.

If in doubt, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist.


This product is not meant for long-term use (no more than 8 days) without medical advice.

*Occasional constipation: linked to a recent change in lifestyle (travelling). This is a short-term treatment. All recent cases of constipation that are unexplained by a change of lifestyle, accompanied by any pain, fever, swelling of the stomach: consult your doctor.

*Chronic constipation (long-term). Can be linked to 2 causes:

- intestine illness

- an imbalance of the intestine function due to food habits or lifestyle.

Treatment includes:

- increased intake of foods of vegetable origin (green vegetables, crudities, bread, fruit...),

- increased intake of water and fruit juice consumption,

- increased physical activity (sport, walking...),

- defecation reflex,

- intake of additives to food.

*For children: The treatment of constipation is focused on lifestyle and dietary measures: in particular, the use of the right amount of water with infant milk powders, a diet rich in plant products, increased consumption of fruit juice.

Patients with rare hereditary galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medication.

Precautions for use:

This medication should be used with caution in cases of liver or kidney disease and patients treated with diuretics.


Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

This drug can only be used during pregnancy following advice from your doctor. If you discover that you’re pregnant during the treatment, consult your doctor who is the only person who can assess whether the drug should be continued.

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any drugs.


*Constipation: dosage should be adapted depending on the results.


- constipation treatment: 1-3 sachets per day.

- maintenance treatment: 1-2 sachets per day.

Children: constipation treatment: 1 sachet per day.

If diarrhoea appears, decrease dosage.

*Hepatic encephalopathy: the best dosage is the one when you can defecate twice per day.

Adults: 1-2 sachets per day.

How to use and Length of Treatment:

Duphalac can be taken as is or diluted in a drink.

Length of treatment depends on the symptoms.

Side effects:

Like all drugs, Duphalac can cause side effects (this will not affect everyone):

- bloating, semi-liquid faeces. This can appear at the beginning of treatment, they stop as the dose is adapted.

- rare cases of itching, anal pains and weight loss.

If you notice side effects that are not mentioned here, or if certain side effects become more severe, please consult your doctor or pharmacist.
