The liver plays a vital role in your body. It is involved in the digestion of food, converting nutrients into chemicals the human body needs. Moreover, it rids your body of toxic substances. Therefore, you should understand the essence of liver problems, their types, and how to treat them.

The essence of liver problems

Liver problems can be associated with an unhealthy lifestyle and can be inherited (i.e. genetic predisposition).

The causes of liver disease are many and varied:

  • Parasites and viruses - cause acute inflammation. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis C most commonly cause liver problems. You can get infected through food, water, contact with an infected person, blood, and unprotected sex.

  • Immune system abnormality - it is characterized by the immune system's ability to attack certain body parts, including the liver. Autoimmune liver diseases include autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis.

  • Genetic changes - changes in the genes are inherited from one or both parents. Specifically, these genetic changes cause different types of substances to accumulate in the liver and lead to liver damage. Such genetic liver diseases are hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, and Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.

  • Cancer - liver cancer, liver adenoma, and bile duct cancer lead to liver damage.

  • Other causes - it include type 2 diabetes, intake of certain medications, alcohol abuse, being overweight, an unbalanced diet, stress, and others.

Types of liver problems

Types of liver disease are divided according to the cause of liver damage:

  • Alcohol-related liver disease - the cause is the regular consumption of too much alcohol, which often leads to alcoholism;

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease - fatty liver disease is not related to alcohol consumption but rather to being overweight, eating an unhealthy diet, and eating high in fatty foods;

  • Viral hepatitis - it is caused by a viral infection. Other types of hepatitis are caused by infection, contaminated food and water, alcohol consumption and others;

  • Hemochromatosis - it is a gene that is passed from parents to children;

  • Primary biliary cirrhosis - it is due to problems with the immune system.

Symptoms of liver diseases

The presence of symptoms indicates that there is already liver damage. Usually, when liver disease is still at an early stage, there may not be as many visible symptoms to help make an early diagnosis.

When you have liver disease, you are sure to see some of the following symptoms:

  • Yellowish skin and eyes

  • Itchy skin

  • Swelling of the feet and ankles

  • Abdominal pain and swelling

  • Dark-coloured urine and pale-coloured stools

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Tendency to bruise easily

If you notice these symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible. The liver disease must be detected early to increase the success of early treatment.

Deteriorating liver health leads to cirrhosis and liver failure, which is life-threatening. In this case, a liver transplant may be necessary.

Treatment

Treatment depends on whether it is in the early stages and how damaged the liver is.

Before proceeding with treatment, the doctor will order several tests:

  • Blood tests

  • Imaging tests

  • Checking a tissue sample

Sometimes, a lifestyle change (stopping alcohol, eating a balanced diet, being physically active, maintaining an average weight, etc.) is sufficient. But in other cases, the intake of medication or surgery is necessary.

In Care From Nature, you will find medications intended for different uses:

  • To normalize the function of the damaged liver as a result of alcohol, medicine, and infections;

  • To treat liver diseases

  • For chronic inflammatory liver diseases and liver cirrhosis

  • Nutritional supplements improve and restore the balance of the liver and bile, etc.
