What is infant milk - essence and composition

Formula milk, also known as infant formula, baby formula, infant milk, baby milk, first milk, and false milk, is made from dry powder and, in most cases, contains cow's milk, vitamins, and minerals. This type of infant feeding is an alternative to breast milk, also known as human milk.

Infant milk contains fat from vegetable oils and protein from cow's milk. These support proper growth and good baby's health. Note that your children cannot take regular cow's milk until they turn 1.

In addition, some more specific infant formula milk does not contain cow's milk but soy or rice. It is a special formula milk designed for babies who are intolerant to cow's milk proteins or lactose.

It is crucial to know that special formulas have significant differences. Therefore they are used under medical supervision in the presence of a health visitor.

Adapted milk is taken from 0 to 12 months of age, and after six months of age, your baby can take solids. Infant milk is easy to prepare - you need to mix powdered formula with cooled boiled water and feed your baby with a bottle.

Types of adapted milk

The types of infant formula milk you will find on the market are:

  • First infant milk - known as first milk, is suitable from birth and should be the first formula to feed your baby unless there are other recommendations from a midwife, health visitor, or public health nurse. The first infant milk contains two types of protein: whey and casein.

  • Goat's milk formula - the adapted milk is not suitable for babies with cow's milk allergy.

  • Hungrier baby formula - known as hungry milk, is suitable from birth. Note that more casein is in its composition, which is harder to digest.

  • Anti-reflux formula - has a thickened formula, the purpose of which is to prevent reflux in babies. You can only feed your baby this milk if it is prescribed by a doctor, as there are more specific instructions for preparation.

  • Comfort formula - contains cow's milk proteins that have already been partially hydrolysed. It helps in easily digesting the milk and preventing colic and constipation. Note that comfort infant formula adaptive milk is not suitable for babies allergic to cows' milk.

  • Lactose-free formula -is suitable for babies who are lactose intolerant.

  • Hypoallergenic formula - is an infant formula with fully hydrolysed proteins, meaning that the formula is suitable for babies who have an allergy to cow's milk.

  • Follow-on formula - it is suitable for six-months-old babies. Note that there are cases when feeding with follow-on formula milk is not recommended. Consultation with a medical professional is necessary.

  • Good night milk - it is suitable for babies who are over six months of age. It is sold as special milk for feeding babies at bedtime. We recommend you ask your doctor before using it.

  • Soya milk - is suitable for babies over six months of age and contains soya beans. Soya milk is an alternative to infant formula milk that contains cow's milk. It makes it suitable for babies with a cow's milk allergy, but it is essential to consult a healthcare professional.

  • Toddler milk - the milk is for babies in their first year, and it is an alternative to whole cow's milk.

Peculiarities of feeding with infant formula or breast milk

There are many reasons why mothers cannot feed their babies with breast milk, so they feed them with adapted milk.

The main reasons are:

  • not all women can breastfeed;

  • taking medication;

  • there are health conditions of the mother or baby that do not allow for breastfeeding.

In addition, as parents, you should know that some babies are intolerant to certain ingredients in infant formula milk, which can also trigger allergies. Therefore, it is crucial to check the composition of the specific adaptive milk and whether your child reacts after feeding with particular infant milk.
